Voters in one of Terrebonne’s most populous areas trounced a proposed fire district tax increase Saturday night.

But in the community of Bourg — south of Houma — voters approved a $2 million bond issue. The measure passed despite recent negative attention on rec districts altogether and criticism of how some in Houma do business.

The Bayou Cane Fire District had sought a 12-mill property tax increase, intended for new firefighters and training center upgrades.

Results from the Louisiana Secretary of State showed the two initiatives garnering a 66 percent no vote for each.

A 10-mill tax for new firefighters drew 686 votes out of 2046 cast. A second ballot item for a 2-mill increase got 696 yes votes out of 2027 cast.

In Bourg’s Recreation District 5, 60 percent of voters gave a yes to a $2 million bond to help pay for lighting at the district’s new baseball field.

In Lafourche Parish Martin Wade’s 62 percent bested Stacy Hernandez who drew 38 percent to become the Ward 4 Justice of the Peace, covering the Raceland area.

David Harrelson, acting chief of the Lockport Police Department, drew 59 percent of the vote. Challengers Ernest Boudreaux Sr got 30 percent and Chester Douglas 11 percent.

Curtis Pierce beat out Jimmy Lafont for seat “E” on the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, 53 to 47 percent.

Voters living north of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway renewed the North Lafourche Levee District’s 6-mill tax renewal, 65 percent to 35 percent.
