Today a group of locals dedicated to improving the lives of our most vulnerable will be honored for their efforts.

The Houma-Thibodaux Region of the state’s chapter of the National Association of Social Workers is hosting its annual award banquet at the Ellendale Country Club from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event is part of the entire month of March being celebrated across the country as Professional Social Work Month.

The banquet will feature a variety of meat and seafood options for those observing Lent. The winners this year are Karen Schilling as the Social Worker of the Year, Tammy Medlen as the School Social Worker of the Year, Magnolia Family Services as the Organization of the Year and Peggy Bowers for the Dorothy Schenthal Leadership Award.

Ben Meyers, a social worker at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center who works with the local NASW chapter, said the Bayou Region’s growing medical industry means medical social work, particularly hospice and end-of-life work, will become increasingly important in the future. However, today’s banquet is about celebrating those across the profession’s spectrum in their efforts to help others.

“There’s so many different disciplines in the field of social work, and the main purpose is to make a difference in the lives of others by making primary changes in their lifestyles to help them improve their situations,” Meyers said.

Those interested in attending the banquet can RSVP with chapter president Peggy Bowers by contacting her via email at midnight_1019@yahoo.com.
