The U.S. Coast Guard is in possession of the 17th fast response cutter built by Bollinger Shipyards.

The USCGC Donald Horsley, a 154-foot patrol craft, is the 17th vessel in the Coast Guard’s Sentinel-class FRC program. The vessel was delivered March 5 in Key West, Fla. The Coast Guard expects to commission the vessel in May to the 7th Coast Guard District in Puerto Rico.

The FRC incorporates a parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. Described by senior Coast Guard officials as an operational “game changer,” the vessel has a flank speed of 28 knots, state-of-the-art command, control, communications and computer technology and a stem launch system for its 24-foot cutter boat.

The vessel is named after Master Chief Petty Officer Donald H. Horsley, who received the Bonze Star with combat “V” device for his leadership of Division 13 of Coast Guard Squadron One during the Vietnam War.

“We are very pleased to announce the delivery of the latest FRC built by Bollinger Shipyards, the USCGC Donald Horsley, to the 7th Coast Guard District in Puerto Rico,” Ben Bordelon, Bollinger’s president and CEO said in a release. “We are looking forward to honoring and celebrating the heroic acts of Donald Horsley at the vessel’s commissioning.”

The Sentinel-class cutter, previously referred to as the Fast Response Cutter, is part of the Coast Guard’s deepwater program.

Bollinger delivered five similar vessels to the Coast Guard last year: the Issac Mayo, Richard Dixon, Heriberto Hernandez, Joseph Napier and Winslow W. Griesser Sentinel-class cutters. The Richard H. Patterson was delivered to the 7th Coast Guard District in Puerto Rico earlier this month. •
