The American Cancer Society has presented Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center its Mid-South Division 2012 community award.

The recognition honors volunteers and healthcare facilities that have impacted awareness and education of cancer patients, caregivers, and survivors.

The ACS selected LJCMC and its employees as recipient of this award in recognition of the facility’s Cancer Resource Center. This is the first Cancer Resource Center located at a public hospital in the ACS southeast market.

“Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center has demonstrated a strong relationship with the American Cancer Society, so this was the ideal facility to have a Cancer Resource Center in the territory,” ACS health initiatives representative Shea Austin said. “This award is certainly well-deserved.”

The ACS credited what it calls “outstanding champions” including LJCMCCEO Rhonda Green, case management manager Wendy Rotolo, and social service counselor and Kristy Bourgeois inside for contributing to the cancer resource center.

“I cannot give enough credit to our staff for providing the best possible care to our oncology patients,” Green said. “The Cancer Resource Center has proven to be invaluable in this effort since opening a year ago,” Green said. “We’re very honored to receive this award.”

During the past year, the cancer resource center has served more than 226 area cancer patients with printed material, wigs, hats, scarves, and other treatment-related gift items are always available free of charge for those undergoing cancer treatments and facing partial or total loss of hair due to cancer treatments.

The American Cancer Society Mid-South Division includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. This is the first time LJCMC has received the ACS award.
