The 143-room hotel being constructed next to the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center by San Antonio developer K Partners Hospitality Group will be occupied by a Courtyard by Marriott.

Confirmation had been pending for the hotel to be occupied by a Marriott SpringHill Suites, but K Partners’ franchise application for the Courtyard hotel was approved by Marriott’s development committee on Feb. 22.

Typical Courtyards hotels include exercise rooms and offer 24-hour food and snacks.

Civic Center Director David Ohlmeyer said the center has experienced difficulty when trying to attract conventions to Houma because of the lack of a hotel within walking distance of the facility.

“They say call us back when you get it,” he said. “If we have an ample number of hotel rooms, we’ll be able to get our foot in the door.”

“The hotel will have a tremendous impact,” he said. “I can’t say how many more (conventions) it will attract because the hotel hasn’t been there before.”

K Partners Hospitality Group’s Courtyard by Marriott will be a great boon to the area, helping to attract more events, according Houma-Terrebonne. * File photo
