The Port Fourchon Harbor Police Department was recognized for its “unwavering commitment and exceptional support” of the U.S. Coast Guard’s port safety security and marine environmental protection missions for three consecutive years.

The police department was given a Certificate of Merit at the June 27 change-of-command ceremony in Houma.

Specifically, the department was commended for its “willingness to immediately respond to a scene involving an oil spill threat,” which the Coast Guard credits with saving the agency untold personnel and resource hours.

“The Fourchon Harbor Police have been tremendous partners of the Coast Guard during my tenure in Houma,” Coast Guard Lt. Commander Chris Woodle said. “There were many, many times they stepped up and assisted us with our port safety and security missions, so I wanted to formally recognize them at my change of command ceremony.”

Chief of Harbor Police Jon Callais accepted the award on his department’s behalf.

“It is a great honor for our department to receive this Certificate of Merit from the Coast Guard,” he said. “I would like to praise all the men and women in our department for a job well done.”
