The Burger King on West Tunnel Boulevard in Houma is getting a major overhaul, restaurant officials say.

Colorado-based Westec Construction Management took a big chunk out of the restaurant’s roof on Monday.

The renovations to the building started with removing equipment, including tables, chairs and cookware from the interior of the building at 6 a.m.

By 4 p.m., workers were stripping the siding off the building and clearing debris from the roof.

Restaurant owner, California-based Strategic Restaurants Acquisition Company, has been remodeling and building new Burger Kings since 2005. Company spokeswoman Myrna Chultz, vice president of marketing and development, said the company wanted a more modernized look.

“The new interior and exterior décor and color schemes will definitely be a big change,” she said.

The West Tunnel Burger King is the first in the Houma-Thibodaux area to unveil the new look. Chultz said the restaurant renovations are done on a cycle, and more area BKs could see renovations in the near future.

The restaurant employs nearly 45 workers. During the renovations, Chultz said the staff has been assigned to other locations nearby.

The projected completion date for the renovations is two weeks. Bill Uransky, district manager for local BKs, said the remodeled Burger King will open no later than Jan. 22, if weather permits.
