M C Bank & Trust is teaching Morgan City Junior High School students to save.

The partnership between the two dates back to 1997. Through the Adopt-A-School program, the bank and school completed a number of small projects.

But, to date, eighth graders’ “Trip to the Bank” – which ties into the school’s math program – remains a favorite.

Nancy Rhodes’ math class made the trip in May. The class learned how to keep a checkbook. The lesson included writing checks, balancing registers, endorsing and depositing money.

In the final phase, students visited M C Bank & Trust, made transactions and followed their money as it made its way through the different departments. The behind-the-scenes tour allowed the students to gain an understanding of the bank’s inner-workings.

In all, M C Bank has 10 Adopt-A-Schools. The bank has helped purchase agenda programs, computers, supplies and other items.

Students and employees look forward each year to the math program, said Frances G. Dupre, of M C Bank’s Human Resources Department. “It gets the students thinking about everything from how they plan to make their money to how to save and spend it. It gives the students the opportunity to interact with employees and ask questions about grown-up situations that could effect their future educational decisions,” she said.
