The state sales tax will be eliminated on hurricane preparedness items purchased in Louisiana beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 24, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue is offering the 2008 Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday on numerous items residents use when hurricanes threaten.

Local sales taxes will still be charged.

The state tax will be waived for the first $1,500 of the price on each of the following items:

• Storm shutter devices

• Portable generators

• Gas fuel tanks

• Tarpaulins

• Portable self-powered radios, two-way radios and weather-band radios

• Cell phone batteries and chargers

• Ground anchor systems or tie-down kits

• Non-electric food storage coolers

• Flashlights and candles

• Batteries (C, D, AA, AAA, 6-volt, 9-volt)

The state sales tax holiday will not apply to purchases made at convenience stores, hotels or airports.

The Department of Revenue first offered a sales tax holiday on hurricane preparedness items in 2006 as part of Katrina and Rita relief efforts. The state waived the tax on prices up to $2,500 at that time.

The department also offers a sales tax holiday in August on all items purchased in the state.
