The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will man a DWI checkpoint Dec. 30 between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Dec. 31. The checkpoint, in the central section of the parish, is one of several special traffic enforcement operations in place as part of law enforcement’s Operation Blue Christmas.

Deputies and officers from other agencies will be on the watch for drivers who are suspected of being impaired and checking for other traffic safety issues including proper seat belt usage.

Motorists suspected of DWI who refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test will lose their driver’s license for one year on a first offense. For a second offense, the penalty increases to two years.

Anyone convicted of a DWI while a driver’s license is suspended because of another DWI offense will face automatic prison time. Lafourche Parish is also a “no refusal all the time” parish, meaning if a suspected drunk driver refuses a breathalyzer test, deputies will seek a search warrant to have that person’s blood tested.
