The popular anti-drug/alcohol use program DARE will be offered to students at the Max Charter School on Nicholls State University’s campus in Thibodaux. Classes are scheduled to begin next week.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and school principal Vanessa Adams inked a deal last week that adds the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program as part of the curriculum this school year.

The Max Charter School opened Aug. 15. It serves 120 children with dyslexia and other learning challenges.

Unlike public schools, Max Charter is governed by its own board – a mix of individuals from the business community, NSU faculty and students’ parents.

In Lafourche Parish, about 10,000 students undergo the 16-week program.

The sessions are designed to promote healthy choices among elementary and middle school students.

“Having gone through the DARE instructor training myself, I know the benefits of this program to the young people in our parish,” he said.

The sheriff said Max Charter School first through fifth graders will get visitation lessons, while sixth graders will participate in the full-fledged program. Besides teaching the value of healthy choices, DARE offers lessons in drug prevention, problem solving, conflict resolution and dealing with peer pressure, including preventing bullying.

Also at the contract signing was Lt. Jeff Landry, the head of the sheriff’s office’s DARE program and past president of the Louisiana DARE Officers Association. Landry serves as a state mentor instructor and evaluates other DARE programs across the state.
