Open enrollment dates for the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) begin tomorrow and extend through Dec. 7.

The dates changed for 2011 to ensure seniors have their membership cards in hand and receive uninterrupted health-care coverage Jan. 1, 2012, according to the state Department of Insurance.

The state agency’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is encouraging beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug plans to review their current health and drug plan coverage for any changes the plans may be making for the coming year.

During the open enrollment period, beneficiaries can choose to change plans or shift from Medicare Advantage to traditional Medicare.

SHIIP counselors are available to provide free help with choosing health care plans. SHIIP also assists with claims, supplemental and long-care insurance policy comparison, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare supplement insurance and with the Medicare appeals process.
