The person who died from the shooting at a party early New Year’s morning has been identified as Eric Thibodaux, a Nicholls State University health sciences freshman from Larose.

Dr. Michele Caruso, Vice President for Student Affairs, sent the following message to students and staff:

Dear Nicholls Community,

I am deeply saddened to inform you of a tragic event that cost the life of one Nicholls student and left another seriously injured in the early hours of New Year’s morning. Eric P. Thibodaux, a health sciences freshman from Larose, La., died in the early hours of January 1, 2021. We offer our deepest condolences to Eric’s family, friends and loved ones. Please keep the second victim in your thoughts as he recovers from his injuries.

During this time of tremendous loss, we are reminded of the importance of community. There is no greater sadness for a university and its members than the loss of a student. I would like to remind you that we have services to support the emotional well-being of our students, faculty and staff.

I encourage those who feel they may need support or observe a Nicholls family member in distress to contact the Counseling Center, which remains open for in-person appointments and virtual appointments, at (985) 448-4080 or counseling@nicholls.edu

Sincerely,

Dr. Caruso
