Several Nicholls State University professors have received grants from the Louisiana Board of Regents in recent weeks which will total more than $280,000 – a huge honor and coup to the Thibodaux-based school.

The following are the grants given and their purpose in benefitting the academic experience for Nicholls students:

-Dr. Sean Graham, an assistant biology professor at Nicholls, has received more than $99,000 to study the effects nutrients have on coastal wetlands over the decades.

-Dr. Matthew Gamel, an assistant math professor, received $85,000 to enhance the sophomore mathematics experience for students.

-Dr. Cynthia Vavasseur, an assistant education professor, received nearly $40,000 to study how technology can be used in K-12 classrooms.

-Dr. Aaron Pierce, an associate biology professor, received $36,000 to study how to improve biology graduate student recruitment.

-Dr. Uttam Pokharel, an assistant chemistry professor, received nearly $20,000 to study organometallic polyacenes for organic optoelectronic applications.

According to a news release issued by Nicholls, the funds were given by the Louisiana Education Quality Support Fund, which was established in 1986 and has provided more than $1.5 billion in educational enhancements and opportunities to Louisiana students.
