Nicholls State University will ring in the new school year in style – by celebrating a rare solar eclipse.

The local university will host a forum on Monday about the solar phenomenon and a watch party in the afternoon as the eclipse occurs.

Dr. Kaisa Young, an astronomer and assistant professor of physics will discuss the details of the eclipse, while also giving details for how to view it safely from 9:40-10:30 a.m. in Peltier Auditorium.

At noon, the Nicholls community is encouraged to gather in the fields adjacent to the Harold Callais Recreation Center to watch the eclipse. Telescopes and eclipse glasses will be on hand.

The eclipse will last about 90 minutes, beginning at about 12:15 p.m. and ending around 1:50 p.m.

It will be the first total solar eclipse in 99 years to cross the whole country and the first to reach the lower 48 state in 38 years.

According to the news release, Thibodaux will see a 74-percent block of the sun at about 1:28 p.m.
