Think twice before setting that trash pile, construction debris or anything other than vegetative matter ablaze. You could pay a fine, warns state Department of Environmental Quality spokeswoman Jean Kelly.

To ensure the quality of Louisiana’s air, the state prohibits open burning.

Among the materials that should never be burned are:

• Plastic and other synthetic materials

• Tires and other rubber products

• Paints, household and agricultural chemicals

• Asphalt shingles, heavy oils, wire

• Newspaper, cardboard and other paper products

• Buildings and mobile homes

Kelly said outdoor fires pollute the air and can make it difficult to breathe.

To report illegal open burning, call the state DEQ at (225) 219-3640 or the Southeast Regional Office in New Orleans at (504) 736-7701.

St. Mary Parish residents can report open burning at the Acadiana Regional Office in Lafayette at (337) 262-5584.
