There is a possibility of strong to severe storms in the Houma area this afternoon and evening moving through to Friday early morning hours, according to the National Weather Service New Orleans.
Overview:
WHAT:
SLIGHT RISK to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather
WHEN:
An initial round of severe thunderstorm activity is possible in the mid to late afternoon hours (2-6 PM). A second round of severe thunderstorm activity could develop along the cold front in the overnight hours (9 PM-3 AM).
WHERE:
The initial round of severe thunderstorm activity in the mid to late afternoon hours (2-6 PM) is expected to be concentrated in the area of enhanced risk (metro Baton Rouge, the Hammond area, and Southwest Mississippi).
The second round of severe thunderstorm activity in the late evening hours (9 PM-3 AM) associated with the cold front is expected to affect all of Southeast Louisiana, Southwest Mississippi, and Coastal Mississippi.
CONFIDENCE:
We are confident that there will be thunderstorms across the area and that a few will be severe. We also have increased confidence in the timing and location of the severe thunderstorm activity.
IMPACTS:
The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:
Wind gusts greater than 60 mph will be possible
A few tornadoes will be possible
Large hail in excess of 1 inch in diameter will be possible
