(AP) Lafourche Parish principals and assistant principals don’t have to manage storm shelters in their schools any longer.

The parish school board voted unanimously Wednesday to end a policy in place since 1975.

If a major storm hits, the parish government will manage the district’s two designated storm shelters, Central Lafourche and Thibodaux high schools, said Seth Holloway, manager of the School Board’s Safety Department.

“We’ll give them the keys, and they’ll man the shelter,” he said.

Liability was the main reason his department recommended the new policy. There were other reasons, too. “Really, it’s not their line of work,” Holloway said. “It forces our employees to stay in this area.”
