The Regional Military Museum in Houma has recently acquired a late 20th-century Russian helicopter as new permanent artifact in their museum. As stated on the museum’s Facebook announcement, “It’s not everyday you get to see a Russian helicopter in Houma, Louisiana!”

The new artifact is an Mil Mi-2 helicopter built by the company Hoplight, and is estimated to have originated between 1960 and 1990 (the exact date is currently unknown). The Russian helicopter was used as a utility aircraft, primarily to transport troops or supplies between different locations.

“Back in early November we had a military reunion in Houma, and one of the veterans who came to the museum explained that he was 80 years old and his kids were not interested in his military artifacts,” said Will Theriot, Regional Military Museum Board President. “So he asked if he could donate them to museum. So, we acquired a 1939 aircraft that was used to hunt for submarines in World War II, and this extraordinary Russian helicopter.”

The helicopter is not currently out on display for the public to enjoy, but restoration and cleaning efforts will take place after January 1, 2024. “The local Coast Guard unit has offered to come help us clean the helicopter up, since it has been sitting in a warehouse for years,” said Theriot. “But we are hoping to have it on display, and know even more about it, early next year.” See a video of the helicopter here.
