A semi trailer containing non-perishable food items, enough food for approximately 27,000 meals, will be distributed to six Terrebonne Parish food pantries Thursday, Aug. 19.

The food pantries receiving the donations are Vision Christian Center, Storm Outreach Community Center, Good Samaritan Food Bank of Terrebonne, Refuge Restoration Outreach, Plymouth Rock Baptist Church, and Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government.

BHP Billiton Petroleum employee volunteers will be on hand to help offload the semi and load food pantry trucks with the nonperishable food items.

BHP Billiton will also announce a significant contribution to help Second Harvest Food Bank meet the increased demand for emergency food assistance in coastal Louisiana parishes affected by the recent oil spill. The announcement will be made at 10:30 a.m. at Vision Christian Center, 4467 Highway 24 in Bourg.

Second Harvest Food Bank member agencies in the coastal parishes have reported an approximate 25% increase in the number of new clients served and increases in the number of fishermen, hospitality and oil field workers seeking emergency food assistance as a result of the recent oil spill incident.

More than 315,000 meals have been distributed through disaster relief sites and by Second Harvest Food Bank member agencies in the affected areas since May 1.

BHP Billiton accelerated and expanded its annual employee Season of Sharing Food Drive that normally supports the Houston Food Bank to also help address the needs that southern Louisiana communities are presently experiencing. BHP Billiton employees live and work in the communities impacted by the spill.

The semi trailer of food that will be delivered will help provide approximately 27,000 meals in Terrebonne Parish alone. Ultimately, BHP Billiton’s gift will help Second Harvest Food Bank provide more than one million meals across the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
