A 44-year-old Thibodaux man died Sunday when he overcorrected his pickup truck on Louisiana Highway 3185, sending it spinning off the road and into a tree, state police said.

The accident happened near the Lafourche Parish Jail around 10:45 p.m.

Kelly Breaux was traveling east on La. 3185 when he strayed off the right side of the road, said Trooper First Class Gilbert Dardar Jr. When Breaux attempted to steer the 2003 GMC Sierra back onto the road, he overcorrected and his vehicle began rotating counter-clockwise.

The trooper said Breaux crossed the oncoming lane of traffic, veered off the road and struck a tree about 15 feet away.

Dardar said the truck traveled another six feet before it came to rest.

Breaux, who was traveling alone, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to authorities.

Acadian Ambulance transported him to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Dardar said authorities suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. A blood test was conducted and the results are pending, he said.

Also, Dardar said Breaux was traveling about 75 mph in a posted 55 mph zone when it initially veered off the road.

Trooper Burnell Dedeaux is continuing to investigate the incident.
