Following the death of long-time Terrebonne Parish Ward 9 Constable Floyd Trahan in April, an election to fill that office for the next 2.5 years on that term is being included on the Oct. 22 primary ballot.

Two candidates have come forward seeking the office with no previous political experience, but each confident that he can meet the demands of public office.

Paul Breaux said if elected he would like to work in concert with the sheriff’s office to beef up patrols in heavy crime areas. “I used to help [Floyd Trahan] when he was on the fire department and know what he did,” he said.

Gary Trahan said he is a cousin of the former constable and has the time to dedicate to this position. “I know all [the] job concerns is to serve paperwork for the sheriff’s [office],” he said.

Breaux said as a member of the Bayou Black Fire Department he is accustomed to being on the scene of emergencies and believes that he can carry over that work to filling the role as constable. “I’ve got 25 years in the area helping out with fires and storms,” he said. “I’m already out there. I will do patrolling and check out suspicious activity.”

Trahan called on his familiarity with the area as an advantage. “I know just about everybody in this district and have plenty of free time because I’m retired,” he said.
