Houma Police were called to Terrebonne General Medical Center Friday evening after a 14-year-old was admitted to a trauma room unconscious with a gunshot wound to his chest. The boy died Saturday from the wound, according to department spokesman Lt. Todd Duplantis.

Detectives learned the teen, Tanner Thompson, was apparently accidentally shot by his 20-year-old brother, Spencer, around 6 p.m. Friday, the spokesman said. According to police, the older Thompson brother was attempting to make the gun safe when the hammer accidentally fell and the gun discharged.

The incident occurred at Spencer Thompson’s Suthon Street home.

The case remains under investigation.
