With more than 2 million Americans taking part in the annual event, Terrebonne Parish residents have an opportunity Thursday to learn more about signing up to participate in the American Cancer Society’s signature event, Relay for Life.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Terrebonne Parish team captain’s rally will be Thursday at noon at Terrebonne General Medical Center’s Medical Atrium conference room. For those who cannot make it during the day, a team captain’s rally will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the TGMC Outreach Center in Southland Mall.

The meetings will offer people an opportunity to form a team for Relay For Life.

In 2006, more than 4,300 communities across the United States participated in Relay For Life. From those communities, more than $340 million were raised — making it the largest fund-raiser in the nation.

Each year, Relay For Life gives residents an opportunity to donate to the cause in an overnight event filled with activities, fun and community spirit. All funds raised support American Cancer Society programs designed to reduce cancer incidence and deaths through research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Today there are over 9 million cancer survivors living, but more than 1,500 people die of cancer each day.

For more information on participating in Relay For Life, contact Becky Dupre, 2007 Relay For Life Chair, at (985) 856-5607 or the American Cancer Society at (985) 851-7776 or log onto www.cancer.org.
