For the 61st year in a row – with a minor historical exception – local American Legion posts will select a teenager of the year from nominations submitted by their schools.

But this year there is a new twist. Educators have also been nominated for a new Educator of the Year award, through a cooperative endeavor with the Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence.

When the Teenager of the Year award is given Saturday night the Educator of the Year award will be given as well.

Gilberto Burbante, the Director of the Veterans Affairs Office at Nicholls State University, will be the keynote speaker at the dinner, which will be held at American Legion Post 31 in Houma.

Tickets are still available for $20 each as well as corporate sponsorships. Representatives of the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce, South Central Industrial Association, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government and the Terrebonne Parish School Board are also expected to attend.

In addition to a student from one of Terrebonne’s high schools being named, a home-schooled Teenager of the Year will also be chosen.

Selection of the outstanding Teenager and Educator are made through a blind review process by a committee of veterans, past American Legion commanders and educators from TFAE, said Lee Shaffer, the program’s chairman.

This American Legion recognition of the Teenager of the Year began in 1957. The first winner was Leo Hebert, Jr., who became a doctor. The winners from this year will also be announced at next Wednesday’s annual Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce banquet.

Information on sponsorship or tickets can be obtained from Lee Shaffer at (985) 804-2265.
