Terrebonne Parish is under a state of emergency as officials monitor flooding threats from nearby rivers.

Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet declared the state of emergency this morning in reaction to rising water levels from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, according to a press release from the Terrebonne Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. TOHSEP has spoken with federal, state and local officials to discuss the rising water levels.

According to the release, the Atchafalya is expected to crest at 9.5 feet on Jan. 23. However, this level could rise if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opens the Morganza Control Structure. The USACE has not made a decision on opening it at this time.

Terrebonne Parish Public Works has begun work to minimize the effects of any potential flooding in the parish resulting from increased Atchafalaya water levels.
