A Thibodaux man was arrested for robbing Harvey’s Cypress Inn in Chackbay last Friday night.

Farrell Steib Jr., 24, of 158 Rodrigue St., was charged with robbery, battery and burglary charges after pushing an attendent and threatening to shoot her.

Steib was playing the video poker machine at Harvey’s Cypress Inn. Shortly before closing time, he went to cash in a $10 ticket. According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Larry Weidel, Steib turned before exiting the business and, with his hand under his shirt, told the attendent he had a gun and demanded cash. He pushed the woman and told her again that he had a gun. Again, he reported his demand for money, threatening to shoot the attendent if she didn’t comply.

The woman turned over cash to Steib and he left the building, Weidel said.

When a search for Steib failed, detectives alerted surrounding parishes and obtained an arrest warrant for the Thibodaux man, the spokesman said.

The hunt for Steib extended to St. James Parish and the Westwego Police Department with no success.

On Sunday, two days after the robbery, Steib was arrested during a joint operation by the Lafourche Parish and St. James sheriff’s offices. Steib was first taken to the St. James Parish Jail, and was later transported to Lafourche Parish where he was charged with first-degree robbery and simple battery. State District Judge Walter Lanier Jr. set his bond at $200,000.

Lafourche detectives have also linked Steib to a March 4 burglary of a Chackbay home, Weidel said. In that burglary, a 42-inch Samsung television, valued at $3,000, was stolen. Steib was named as a possible suspect in the crime, the spokesman said.

When questioned about the burglary earlier this week, Steib admitted to stealing the TV. He told detectives he sold the set to some people in the Magnolia projects for $100 worth of crack cocaine, Weidel said. Steib was subsequently charged with simple burglary and transported back to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux.

Steibs criminal record includes theft of a firearm and contempt of court charges, Weidel said.

If convicted for first-degree armed robbery, he could face a maximum fine of $3,000 and 40 years in prison.
