A Thibodaux man died Sunday when the truck he was riding in left La. 3127, struck a tree and came to rest partially submerged in a nearby drainage canal, according to state police.

The incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. near the St. James the Baptist/St. John parish line. The driver also died in the crash, Trooper First Class Rodney Hyatt said.

Mathew Falgoust, 22, of Vacherie, was attempting to pass another vehicle in his 1998 Chevrolet truck when he lost control of the car, witnesses told state police.

Falgoust and his front seat passenger, Nicholas Morvant, 26, of Thibodaux, were pronounced dead at the scene, Hyatt said.

Two brothers, Morille Guidry III, 22, and Jeremy Guidry, 18, both of Vacherie, were riding in the back seat of the truck. Hyatt said both men suffered what appeared to be critical injuries.

Acadian Ambulance transported the two to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Hyatt said no one in the truck was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

In compliance with state law, Hyatt said blood tests will be conducted. It is unknown if alcohol use contributed to the crash, he said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Three people have died in crashes in the Troop C area since the start of 2007, Hyatt said.
