A tropical depression has formed in the Gulf of Mexico. In the next 18 hours, it will move onto Louisiana’s coast, likely as a tropical storm.

The National Hurricane Center announced this morning that an area of disturbed weather in the Gulf had developed enough to become a depression. The area is located at 25.6 N, 94.4 W. It’s moving to the north at 16 mph.

The storm is expected to make landfall tonight/early tomorrow morning near the Lafayette area as a weak tropical storm.

Locally, our impacts will not change – regardless of if the storm is named. We’re on the “wet” side of the storm, so we will be hit by rain bands throughout the day as the storm moves closer to shore.

Small flooding threats may exist for unprotected areas outside of our levee systems, but little more.

If things change, The Times will keep you updated.
