The Vandebilt Catholic Cheer team has won countless awards for the athletic grace over the years.

Now, they’re getting accolades for their ability to help in the community, too.

The Terriers were recognized as one of the top 10 high school cheer teams in the nation at raising money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital over the past two years – an honor the team said ranks near the top of their lofty list of accomplishments.

As one of the top producing teams, Vandebilt had the privilege of sending three of their team members to visit St. Jude’s patients and to participate in a pep rally for them annually.

After taking part in that opportunity, this year’s cheer captain, Brooke Haydel, decided to take the school’s fundraising to new heights.

The Vandebilt cheer team started fundraising in July with a car wash, which raised more than $1,000.

Then, they utilized Brooke’s idea, which was to sell hand-made bracelets for $3 a piece to raise money for St. Jude’s.

The bracelets quickly gained steam around the campus. With the help of her sister Katie, the Haydel’s have managed to raise almost $1,400 for the cause – in bracelet sales alone.

“My sister and I are extremely grateful we can contribute to such an outstanding place that exhibits being a servant for Christ,” Brooke said about the donation.

Vandebilt’s cheer team will also hold its annual ‘Team Up for St. Jude’ week from Sept. 25-29, coinciding with the team’s ‘gold-out’ football game on Sept. 29 against South Lafourche.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the team said it’s excited about raising not just money, but also awareness for the cause.
