Have you ever touched a newly-fired piece of hand-glazed pottery?

The crockery is definitely not of the cookie-cutter variety found in the local big box.

The Vandebilt High School Art Club will be auctioning hand-glazed bowls Saturday, March 31, at 6 p.m., in the school’s cafeteria as a fund-raiser to benefit the Bunk House Inn, a homeless shelter located in Houma.

“Most of the bowls being auctioned were made by (student) members of the art club,” said Quinn Moreaux, assistant principal in charge of student affairs. A small kiln is located on the high school’s campus, he said.

Laurie Robichaux, Vandebilt’s art teacher and faculty sponsor of the art club, creates earthenware in a kiln at her home, Moreaux said. Some of her bowls will be auctioned at the event, as well as a few bowls created by other faculty members.

“Laurie taught them decorating and firing” techniques, he said.

The theme of the auction honors international culture. The bowls will feature designs representing the varieties of world culture.

Tickets for the auction cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door. The ticket price includes a dinner, and can be purchased at the Vandebilt High School office or from art club members, Moreaux said. The Vandebilt Jazz Combo will also perform.

The soups served for the dinner will represent world cuisines, according to a press release.

“This is the first time Vandebilt will be auctioning (pottery)” as a fund-raiser,” Moreaux said.

The event will be a silent auction, meaning there will be no auctioneer, he said.
