Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars who didn’t finish school now are eligible for honorary high school diplomas in Louisiana.

The state education board approved the plan last month after lawmakers backed the honorary diploma provisions earlier this year. Education officials announced the requirements and application information on Monday.

To receive an honorary diploma, a veteran must be a current or former Louisiana resident who would have graduated 1950 through 1955 or from 1964 through 1974 but was in military service and received an honorable discharge.

A similar honorary diploma is offered in Louisiana for World War II veterans.

About 47,000 veterans of the Korean War and 120,000 Vietnam War veterans live in Louisiana, according to the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. The department doesn’t know how many of them would be eligible for an honorary diploma, however.

Veterans can find the application online at http://www.louisianaschools.net or http://www.vetaffairs.com.
