A lightning strike during a local music festival left one woman dead and two others hospitalized.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Brennan Matherne said three women attending the T-Bois Blues Festival in Larose suffered injuries from a lightning strike on Friday. Police said they were in a personal tent on festival grounds during a period of severe weather around 10 p.m. when they were struck.

Police found Jacqui Stavis, 28, of New Orleans, unresponsive at the scene and two other women – ages 30 and 24 – with injuries associated with electric shock.

A Labrador with the women also suffered fatal injuries from the strike, according to police.

All three were transported to the hospital for treatment. Stavis was pronounced dead.

Mike Falgout, organizer of the music festival, offered a statement regarding the incident on the event’s Facebook page on Sunday night.

“The Falgout Family is deeply saddened by the tragic event that occurred this weekend at T-Bois Blues Festival. Every attendee of this small festival is part of the T-Bois family, and we feel as though we lost a family member this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Stavis family and all those who love Jacqui, as well as the others injured and affected by Friday night’s tragedy,” Falgout said.

Friday night’s musical lineup included Nigel Hall and the Nick Moss Band, who closed out the opening night. •
