Alton Fontenot Sr., 72, a native of Port Arthur, Tx., and a resident of Gibson, La., died at his home Monday, January 19.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Guidry Fontenot; two sons, Timothy Fontenot of California and Alton Fontenot Jr. of Houma, La.; three daughters, Karen and husband Dennis Leonard of Gibson, Belinda Cubbedge of Houston, Tx., and Melissa “Missy” and husband Aaron Harwell of Waxahachie, Tx.; two brothers, M.J. Fontenot of Texas and Emery Fontenot Sr. of Washington; three sisters, Betty Fruge of Texas, Joyce Durda of Ohio, and Janice Binagia of Texas; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Ruby Fontenot; and one brother, William “Bill” Fontenot.

The date was December 13, 1958, that Alton and his true love, the heartbeat of his life, Barbara Guidry, were united in marriage. Alton was a retired sandblasting and painting foreman and worked for many oil-field companies. During his retirement, he loved spending time with his family and tending to his garden. He and his wife enjoyed their trips to the casinos where his favorite game was Black Jack. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, January 23, and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at Hargrave Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with burial at Morgan City Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the East St. Mary Veterans Funeral Squad.
