Anthony Lopes “Tony” Carinhas Jr., 77, a native of Patterson, La., and resident of Kenner, La., died Monday, April 2, 2012.


Mr. Carinhas coached and trained professional ballroom instructors and students throughout the United States and became an icon in the world of ballroom dance. Throughout his career he taught both independently and with national organizations such as Arthur Murray, Inc. and Fred Astaire Dance Studios. He held the designation of Licentiate of the United States Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance and was a national judge and examiner for the National Dance Council of America.


He is survived by his nephews, Frank and Druby Guidry and George and Jarvier Carinhas; and nieces, Patti Alvarez and Clementina Jiang.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio Sr. and Mary Carinhas; and siblings, Manuel Carinhas, Mary Guidry and Clementina Sallas.

Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery. (Ibert’s)
