Dennis “Captain D” James Cotton, 54, a native of New Orleans, La., and a resident of Houma, La., died Sunday, May 4, at 9:19 p.m.


He is survived by Crystal and Mark Parfait; brothers, Lawrence A. Cotton, Larry Cotton and wife, Louella, David Cotton and wife, Phyllis, and Daniel Cotton and companion, Samantha; sisters, Dianna M. Cotton, Patricia Cotton, Virginia C. Billiot and husband, Julius, and Jean C. Graham and husband, Richard; 31 nieces and nephews; his god children, Alicia Billiot and Cody Parfait; and many close friends who were considered family.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Cotton and Florence Verdin Cotton.

He was a boat captain with Smith Marine Towing on the Captain Sam. He lived his life to the fullest and loved his job as boat captain for Smith Marine Towing. He was always there to lend a helping hand when needed. He was loved and will be greatly missed. He was a member of Friendswood Church of God.

Visitation will be 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Chauvin Funeral Home and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Friendswood Church of God with a religious service to follow. He will be buried at Grand Caillou Baptist Church Cemetery.

Chauvin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
