Hazel Pontiff Babin, 94, a resident of Ellsworth, died Wednesday, April 16, at 3:20 a.m.


She is survived by her daughters, Julia Marcel Constant and husband, Kenneth, and Jeanette Marcel Naquin; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sidney Adam Babin; her former husband, David Joseph Marcel; her parents, Josef and Angelique Duplantis Pontiff; sons, Orey Galle and Jack Marcel; stepdaughters, Rose Babin Gouzien, Kate Babin Pontiff and Doris Babin Gershner; grandchildren, Cindy, Marsha and Leta Marcel, Bruce Moore and Jennifer Constant Hebert; sister, Minerva “Mae” Gudan; and brother, Herman Pontiff.

She was co-owner of Babin’s Grocery on Little Bayou Black working there for 44 years. Her main hobby was “pen pals”. She had as many as 80 corresponding with them over many years. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Bridget Catholic Church.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Landry’s Funeral Home and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with mass to follow.

Landry’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
