James A. Cowan, 68, a native of Beargrass, N.C., and a resident of Houma, La., died Tuesday, July 8, at 9:26 p.m.


He is survived by his brothers, Earl and Phil Cowan; and sister, Evelyn C. Millerstrom.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Cowan and Allie Woolard Cowan; brothers, Harrell and Wade Cowan; and sister, Polly Modlin.


He was the former chairman of the English department of Nicholls State University, Head of the Senior Honors Incentive Program with the Terrebonne School System and a Friend of the Terrebonne Parish Library.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mount Olive College, 634 Henderson St., Mount Olive, N.C. 28365, or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, July 14, at First United Methodist Church in Houma with a memorial service to follow.

Samart Funeral Home of Houma is in charge of the arrangements.
