Palmer Nix “P.N.” Shavor, 88, a native of Phenix City, Al., and a 50-year resident of Thibodaux, La., died Friday, May 23.


He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Pitre Shavor; sons, Michael Shavor of Donner, La., David Shaver of Abiquiu, N.M., and James Shavor of Baton Rouge, La.; daughters, Diana Shavor Martin of Zachary, La., Brenda Shavor Griffin and Linda Shavor, both of Thibodaux, and Mary Shavor Pino of Maurepas; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Nell Shavor Kelly.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lillian Shavor of Phenix City, and his siblings, Dorothy Allen, Monroe Shavor and Mary Fannie Shavor.

He was a welding fabrication superintendent for J. Ray McDermott and Brown & Root. He raised seven children to success and retired at the age of 62. He was a 32nd degree mason, a shriner and a past master of the Walter I. Lanier Masonic Lodge 307 of Thibodaux and the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the W.O.W. Lodge 369. He was a veteran of World War II and received a special honorable discharge while working on experimental barges for the war as a welder in Portsmouth, Va. He also worked on the U.S.S. Alabama. He was a fullback on the last football team fielded by the U.S. Marine Corps in Quantico, Va., before World War II.He was a loving husband, a proud father and grandfather who considered himself an “honorary Cajun.” His passions included fishing, woodworking, singing, dancing, cooking, calligraphy, photography and entertaining. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and The Calvary Boys gospel group.

Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Thibodaux Funeral Home. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.

Thibodaux Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
