Richard “Zip” Bernard, 91, a native and resident of Lockport, La., died Sunday, Aug. 23.


He is survived by his wife, Marian Arcement Bernard; two daughters, Sandy Bernard St. Pierre and husband Leonard, and Kim Bernard Suggs; two grandchildren, Christopher St. Pierre and Benjamin St. Pierre; and four great-grandchildren, Josie, Kaylie, Carter and Charles St. Pierre.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Bernard Sr. and Ella Aravella Bernard; two brothers, Charles Bernard Jr. and Cyril Bernard; two sisters, Ella Mae Panttila and Ethel Dufrene; and one son-in-law, CW4 Milton Suggs.

He was a parishioner of Holy Savior Catholic Church in Lockport. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from LP&L after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Henry Robertson American Legion Post 83 for 64 years where he served as past Commander. He was instrumental in building the American Legion Home. He was also a founding member of the Lockport Carnival Club. He also belonged to Woodmen of the World, Knights of Columbus and AARP. He loved people and enjoyed helping them out and seeing them laugh. He was a proud and hard working man and a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart and wife of 66 years. He enjoyed cutting fresh flowers every day for his wife. He enjoyed casino trips with the Lockport Senior Citizen Center, football games, his neighbors, walking, politics and his tools. He faithfully attended church every Sunday. He supported numerous charities. Above all, Mr. Zip was a devoted caregiver and loved his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Holy Savior Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Falgout Funeral Home in Lockport is in charge of the arrangements.
