Rose Marcello Caballero, 88, a native of St. Charles Community, La., and resident of Houma, La., died Friday, April 8, 2011.


Mrs. Caballero was a parishioner of Saint Francis de Sales Cathedral. She attended Southwestern University, now known as University of Louisiana at Lafayette. At 21, she enlisted in the United States Women’s Marine Corps and served for three years during World War II. She then moved to Houma and married Paul who had just finished serving in the United States Air Force. They were married for thirty years. Rose was a devoted elementary school teacher most of her working life and retired from the Terrebonne Parish School System. She was a member of the Saint Joseph’s Italian Society and the American Legion Houma Post No. 349. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society, the Veteran’s Administration and the Terrebonne Parish Retired Teachers’ Association.

She is survived by her son, Donovan (Tammy) Caballero; daughter, Kayla (Jason) Lyons; four grandchildren, Brendon and Lauren Caballero and Stephen and Michelle Lyons; and sister, Iona Marcello Bergeron.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Caballero; parents, Sam Marcello and Mary Thibodaux; and four sisters, Priscilla Robichaux, Kate Verret, Pearl Coyle and Genevieve Haydel.
