Sybil Auenson Mitchell, 84, a native of Berwick, La., and a resident of Bourg, La., died Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8:35 a.m.

She is survived by three sons, James F. Mitchell and wife, Sherlie Henry of Meridian, Miss., Ocie L. Mitchell Jr. and wife Susan Coll of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jerry P. Mitchell and wife Kathy Naquin of Bourg; one daughter, Elaine Mitchell Eschete and husband Floyd J. Eschete Jr. of Houma, La.; 12 grandchildren, Theresa “Terry” Mitchell Horton, Julie Mitchell Gardner, Deana Mitchell Schutte, Nicki Mitchell, Ocie Scott Mitchell, Rosemary Mitchell Grant, Stacey Eschete Rembert, Amanda Eschete, Floyd J. Eschete III, Paige Mitchell, Jeri Brooke Mitchell and Joni Mitchell Ashley; and 12 great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Ocie L. Mitchell Sr.; parents, James J. Auenson Sr. and Eva Comeaux Auenson; one son, Wayne J. Mitchell; one grandson, Douglas W. Mitchell; one granddaughter, Melissa A. Eschete; one great-grandson, Logan Gardner; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Nettles; four brothers, Cornelius Auenson, Lenes Auenson, James Auenson and Medric “Spud” Auenson; and two sisters, Agatha Auenson Lamp and Eva Auenson Theriot.

She was a parishioner of St. Ann Catholic Church where she taught CCD for 13 years and was a member of the Ladies Altar Society for 46 years. She was a member and past president, treasurer and secretary of the Bourg Lions Ladies Auxiliary. With over one thousand service hours, she was a proud VIP volunteer for Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana. She was also a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post # 7755. She was also a volunteer for the Lions Eye Foundation, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America Chapter 24, a member of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and a volunteer at the Bourg fair. She was a homemaker who loved sewing and fishing and you could find her at the bingo hall almost any Sunday night.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the St. Ann Community Center in Bourg. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church with burial at the church cemetery.

Samart Funeral Home in Houma, La., is in charge of the arrangements.
