The Rev. Roland J. Dufrene Sr., 79, a native of Gheens, La., and resident of Mathews, La., died at home on Friday, March 12, 2010.


Ordained a deacon of St. Hilary Parish on Dec. 20, 1980, the Rev. Dufrene was active for 25 years. He conducted premarital counseling sessions; served as chaplain for St. Anne Hospital for over 12 years; performed approximately 30 anniversary celebrations, 50 wedding ceremonies, 750 funerals, 1,100 baptisms; visited the sick; and distributed communion to over 45,000 individuals.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa C. Dufrene; children, Roland Jr. (Tanya), Patrick (Beth) Dufrene, Rose (Rickey) Plaisance, Wendy (Eddie) Brunet, Jude (Annie) Dufrene, Penny (Barry) Zeringue and Bill (Adele) Dufrene; 21 grandchildren; 25-plus great-grandchildren; brothers, Rogers and Larry Dufrene; and sisters, Marvely Boudreaux and Judy Hohensee.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Venton and Lucretia Dufrene.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Hilary of Poitiers Church, 333 Twin Oaks Drive, Raceland, La. 70394.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at St. Hilary of Poitiers Church in Mathews. A funeral service and burial will follow at the church mausoleum.

Falgout Funeral Home in Raceland, La. is in charge of arrangements.
