Timothy Lee Melancon, 68, a resident of Raceland, La., died in his sleep of an occluded aorta Thursday, March 11, 2010.

A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Melancon served during the Korean Conflict. He held a black belt in karate; played guitar, sang and told Cajun jokes better than most; wrote and recorded the Cajun hit “Sweet Marie,” which gets more airtime than any other song on “The Little Big Band” CD. He once narrated a documentary about the crab industry, which aired on local TV. A professional graphic artist, prolific writer and editor of the El Paso Times newspaper, where he won a prestigious award for journalism. He was a pilot, cook and caregiver to his mother for the last 10 years of his life.


He is survived by his mother, Leonelle “Nan” Folse Melancon; daughters, Sheri Melancon Herrera of New Mexico, and Kelly Melancon of Houma; sons, Timothy (Nancy) of Niceville, Fla., and Jason Melancon of California; step-daughters, Rhonda LeBlanc and Missy Coston, of Houma; stepson, Jody Johnson; sister, Donna Rae (Paul) Conner of Morgan City; five grandchildren, Shane, Lauren, Devin and Michelle Melancon of Niceville, and Ryan Herrera of New Mexico; nephew, Gavin (Cindy) Conner; niece, Kimberly (Cecil) Hernandez of Morgan City; godfather, “Pott” Folse; and godchild, Laurie Folse Matherne both of Raceland.


He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbert “Casey” Melancon; paternal grandparents, Genevieve and Ullysis “Casey” Melancon; maternal grandparents, Emile and Serillia Bourgeois Folse; uncles, Reed, Harold and Hodges “Dee Dee” Folse and Tom Pennison; aunts, Sylvia Authement Folse, Lois Melancon and Adrial Zeringue Folse.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, at St. Mary Nativity Church. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles Perkins as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions for Masses to be said in Tim’s name are appreciated at St. Mary Nativity Church, 3500 La. Highway 1, Raceland, La., 70394.
