Victoria Matthews Brown, 83, a native of Terrebonne Parish, La., and a resident of Houma, La., died of natural causes Thursday, September 18.


She is survived by two sons, Anthony P. Brown and wife Augustine of Sorrento, La., and Terry M. Brown and wife Audrey of Raceland, La.; three daughters, Rose M. Smith and husband Martin, Patricia A. Payne and husband Frederick, and Lanny J. Ostean and husband Tyrone, all of Houma; 67 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Brown Sr.; her parents, the Rev. James and Hattie Winslow Matthews; her stepmother, Mary Matthews; her in-laws, Humphrey Sr. and Laura Brown; two sons, Willis Brown Jr. and Charles Brown Sr.; two daughters, Beverly A. Bonvillian and Jacqueline Brown Bonvillian; four sisters, Ida Scott, Daisy Matthews, Hattie Lewis and Frances Nevers; four brothers, James Matthews Jr., Thomas Matthews Sr., Earl Matthews Sr. and Junius Mathews; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasantview Missionary Baptist Church and served as “Mother of the Church.”

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, at Pleasantview Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Corinthian Baptist Church in Houma. She will be buried at New Zion Baptist Cemetery.

Community Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
