John Ashley Barras, 60, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of Houma, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 14th, 2022.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 21st, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with funeral to follow at Samart Funeral Home in Gray, Louisiana.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Sharon Robichaux Barras; daughters, Angelle Barras Boyd (Brett), Elise Danielle Barras (Dylan Broussard); son, Andre’ Luc Barras; grandchildren, Luke Thomas Boyd and Danielle Renee Boyd; siblings, Donna Barras Hymel (Dewayne), Lee Michael Barras (Ellen); nieces and nephews, Matthew Hymel, Mitchell Hymel (Jenna), Meghan Hymel, Jonathan Barras and Rachel Barras; aunts, Lydia Foucheux Rogers (Marc), Beth Foucheux Whitman (Johnny).


He was preceded in death by his parents, Dion Lee Barras and Frances Clare Bergeron Barras; grandparents, Fannie Lee Cenac Foucheux (Lionel) and Clyde Lee Barras, Frances M Bergeron and Ashley J Bergeron.

John graduated from Vandebilt High School in 1980, earned a B.S. degree in Geology from Nicholls State University in 1984 and a masters in Geography from LSU in 1991. John worked in geographical information systems for the USGS with emphasis in coastal restoration for many years. John had over 90 peer reviewed scientific publications in which he was the first author or co-author. He was very well respected and liked by his colleagues.

John was a very loving husband, father and grandfather, who adored his children and grandchildren. The family is heartbroken and devastated by his untimely death. He had a passion for coastal restoration in Louisiana. John was a voracious reader with a profound love of history and nature. He will be deeply missed, and we look forward to when we can see him again.


The family would like to thank all who have provided love, support and prayers during this very difficult time.
