Dear Editor,

Are you prepared to spend more money on plumbing repairs? This is exactly what HB1048 by Rep Ponti will cause if it passes.

This bill will remove our Louisiana State Plumbing Code and adopt the international plumbing code. Do we really want Third World plumbing in our state?

Large tract builders and developers are the only ones who will benefit. If they build houses cheaper, they will not pass the savings along. Houses will still sell for fair-market value. You will be stuck paying the bills to correct problems, which will arise from the lower standards. Even the quality of repairs could go down with the follow up bill Ponti has authored, which will allow anyone to perform plumbing work in homes by simply passing a written test with these new lower standards for Louisiana.

But, is this really about money? For some it is, but for me it is not! Our plumbing company will actually profit from this bill. Over 90% of our business is repair work. We will see an increase in repair work if these new standards become law. This is about public health and safety for me. You can’t put a price tag on life. The reason people live longer these days, is not solely due to medicine. Sanitary conditions due to the evolution of plumbing are a major contributor to the health and welfare of our citizens. The consequences from HB1048 will be long term, and your children are likely the ones who will pay the price.

Please help me by contacting your Senator immediately to voice your concerns about HB1048. We do not need to lower plumbing standards in residences or public facilities! Senators, do not vote for private interest groups. Show us that you deserve a seat in office, and vote for public health and safety when House Bill 1048 goes to the senate floor.

Russell Robillard,

Louisiana Master Plumber
