The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team will face some of the best teams in the country in their second season under coach Richie Riley.

The Colonels unveiled their schedule this week – a slate highlighted by 15 home games and also a premier date at Villanova, the 2016 national champions.

Nicholls will also face UL-Lafayette, Tulane, Western Kentucky and others in non-conference play – part of a schedule that Riley said will test the Colonels deeply.

“Our schedule is doing to be extremely challenging,” Riley said. “We play multiple teams that are expected to be picked at the top of their league, including Villanova, who is ranked in the top-10 nationally. The goal with this schedule was to best prepare us to compete at a high level when Southland Conference play begins.”

The challenges begin right out of the gates.

Nicholls opens at the University of Texas – Rio Grand Valley on Nov. 10, before diving right into the stiffest challenge of the year – Villanova.

The Colonels play the Wildcats on Nov. 14 in Philadelphia.

Also on Nicholls’ November schedule is a road date with Western Kentucky (Nov. 19), and an appearance in the Battle for Atlantis Mainland Tournament in Baltimore from Nov. 23-24.

In December, the Colonels play seven of their eight games in Louisiana, including six in Stopher Gym.

The Colonels host UL-Lafayette on Dec. 1. The team also travels to take on Tulane on Dec. 18.

Southland Conference play begins before the start of 2018 and Nicholls will begin at home with home games against Northwestern State (Dec. 28) and Incarnate Word (Dec. 30).
