Media members picked the Nicholls State University men’s basketball team to finish last place in the Southland Conference.

So much for the so-called experts.

The Colonels are red-hot heading into the weekend, and are currently first in the league, owning a 2-0 record.

Nicholls last win was one of the best the program has enjoyed in years – a 68-64 triumph over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, one of the teams expected to be near the top of the league.

First-year coach Richie Riley said the early success is a sign that players have bought into his teachings and vision for the program.

He hopes the team carries that momentum forward toward the rest of the season.

“The guys have really bought in,” Riley said. “We wanted to play faster, and we do push the ball and attack on defense. I think it’s an easy sell, because guys like to score, and we give the opportunity for a lot of guys to get shots, and I think really, the energy is just spread around to everyone.”

The Colonels have a one-two punch that’s tough to beat right now, which also helps.

Senior guards Ja’Dante’ Frye and DeAndre Harris are absolutely on fire right now – each capable of dominating games for stretches to power Nicholls’ offense.

Frye is a local product from Thibodaux – a graduate of E.D. White.

He has contributed to the Colonels since the beginning stages of his career and recently eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier.

Harris is a newcomer, a graduate transfer from North Texas.

He scores with ease. In Nicholls’ final non-conference game, Harris dropped 35 points on Spring Hill, while playing just 29 minutes.

In the Southland opener against Incarnate Word, Harris scored 42 points on 12-of-24 shooting to power the Colonels.

Frye has also been tough, having scored 15 or more points in eight of Nicholls past nine games.

The Colonels will defend their 2-0 conference on the road this weekend at Sam Houston Stage.

From there, the Colonels will travel to Natchitoches for a mid-week date at Northwestern State next Thursday.
