South Lafourche defended its home track by winning the boys’ title, while Thibodaux edged out Terrebonne by one point to win the girls’ title at the Tarpon Relays last Wednesday.

Thibodaux earned 105 points in girls’ events to Terrebonne’s 104 for first place. Vandebilt placed third with 94.

The Tarpons ran away from its competitors in the boys’ events with 110.5 points. South Terrebonne came in second with 94 and Vandebilt placed third with 92.

The Tarpons only won three of 18 events, but placed high in most contests to outpoint the field. They got wins from Tyler Guidry in the shot put (54 feet, .75 inches), Colby Parra in the javelin (154 feet, 3 inches) and Dexter Owensby in the 400-meter dash (51:25).

“We’re starting to get the right combination for district [championships],” said Tarpons head coach Joey Guidroz. “Next week, it’ll come down to the points.”

Despite prevailing in more girls’ events (7-to-4), Terrebonne fell short to Thibodaux on the track.

Thibodaux’s Danielle Carter, the girls’ track MVP, won the 400-meter (1:03:40) and placed second in the 100-meter dash.

Demitra Perry won the 200-meter dash (27:58) for Thibodaux and anchored the winning 400- (52:00) and 800-meter (1:49:79) relay teams.

“We tried a few things today to get ourselves ready for the district meet,” said Thibodaux coach Doug Haydel.

Terrebonne’s Alaina Verdin was named girls’ field MVP for wins in the long (15 feet, 8.25 inches) and high jumps (5 feet, 2 inches).

H.L. Bourgeois’ Christian Williams was named boys’ field MVP with wins in the long- (22 feet, 10.25 inches) and triple jumps (44 feet, 2.25 inches).

Central Lafourche’s Stuart Theriot was named boys’ track MVP with wins in 1,600- (4:45:16) and 3,200-meter runs (10:25:19).

Other multiple winners included H.L. Bourgeois’ boys sweeping the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays (44:61, 1:31:39, and 3:33:51, respectively); Terrebonne’s Sklya Jackson in the girls’ 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs (5:58:59 and 12:47, respectively); and Vandebilt’s Rachel Laurent in the girls’ 100-meter dash (12:53) and pole vault (13 feet, 10 inches).

Laurent failed to break the national high school girls’ pole vault record with the bar set at 14 feet, 2 inches.
